Starting young in the field of business gives Gen Z a powerful advantage. As a young entrepreneur, I’ve learnt so far that starting at an earlier stage is what sets you up for success whether it’s building important business skills, or exploring new ideas. In this post, I will be explaining why youth shouldn’t be a barrier, rather a strength for aspiring entrepreneurs.

When I first began my nonprofit, SpeedForAll, I could remember my millennial dad being shocked when I had mentioned my financial and business strategies to expand the nonprofit. It was hilarious. He quotes, “since when did you begin learning more than me.” My point here is, starting young and tailoring skills to your advantage, especially in a generation where everything is accessible might be the best way to set yourself up for success.

Youth Has Its Power

As a young minded Gen Z entrepreneur, you have a fresh mind and a variety of creativity that may even be strong enough to disrupt traditional business strategies. Research proves that as well. A 70-year review of creativity interventions for children communicated that youth development of creativity is effective, adaptable, and flexible showing that young minds can innovate and problem-solve (Alves-Oliveira et al., 2021).

Accessible Resources to Support Young Entrepreneurs

There are many organizations and competitions that could help with mentorship or even boost your knowledge. For example, Girls Who Invest, DECA, FBLA, and Junior Achievement teach valuable business skills, and help you compete as well.  Due to social media trending in this society, you could learn all the skills you need through YouTube. Even taking courses through Edx or Khan Academy can serve as handy resources.

Examples of Successful Youth Entrepreneurs

Mikaila Ulmer, Founder and CEO of Me & The Bees Lemonade, gained national recognition in high school. At the age of nine, she was featured on Shark Tank which is when she gained an investment for her company. Now she’s a successful entrepreneur and author, all by creating something with her passion and creativity.

Tilak Mehta, at the age of 13,  founded a logistics startup, Paper n Parcels. He created this because he found it stressful to get same day delivery on books he needed for school. Now he owns a billionaire company, standing tall as a young entrepreneur.

Starting off young teaches you to take risks and be bold. It’s all about finding that problem and creating that solution. You have plenty of time to create something big, but why wait when you can start now. Plus, Early Entrepedia is here to support and guide you!
