Helping Teenagers Turn Small Hobbies Into Real Businesses

By : Ivan Teran

For many teenagers nowadays, having a hobby is a part of the routine. Some enjoy making jewelry, others like designing clothes, or even baking desserts, creating artworks and or fixing electronics. Although, what many teenagers may not actually realize is that these hobbies can become the beginning of an actual business. You see, with the right guidance young people or adolescents can learn how to turn something they enjoy doing into a way to earn money, develop skills, and or even build a future career for themselves. Even though starting a business may seem difficult for someone who is still in high school, teenagers do not always need a large amount of money or an expensive idea to actually get started.

One important step is to understand what customers want. For example, a teenager who makes bracelets has to consider whether people are hooked into buying them and how much they are willing to pay. Learning how to set prices and understand the customers can help the young entrepreneurs make better business decisions. Managing money is also important because businesses expenses such as packaging, supplies, and transportation. Learning the difference between revenue, expenses, and profit can help the youth understand how to make smarter decisions and avoid losing profit and or money.

Another challenge is learning how to handle failures. A product might not sell as well as they had expected it to, or customers might not be as interested or hooked in the particular idea. Instead of giving up, teenagers can use these experiences to improve their products and understand what people want. Schools and community organizations can help them by offering business workshops, local markets, and opportunities for students to sell their products and or give more exposure. These experiences allow the teenagers to learn from real situations instead of only reading about business in the classroom.

Overall, helping teenagers turn their hobbies into businesses can teach them the ways of creativity, financial responsibility, communication, and problem solving. Even if their first business does not become successful, the experience that comes within it can still prepare them for future opportunities and growth. Young people do not always need a large amount of money or an extraordinary idea to begin a business. Sometimes, a successful business and entrepreneur can start with a simple hobby they love and the willingness to learn new things.
